La Somone is one of the most beautiful natural sites along the Petite Côte. Between sea and mangrove, the lagoon forms a calm and protected area — perfect for paddleboarding or kayaking. There are no waves here: you move through peaceful waters lined with mangroves, where herons, egrets, and pelicans come to rest.
This activity combines gentle exercise with ecological discovery. Along the way, you’ll follow winding channels through the reserve, observe birds, and discover the natural breeding grounds of many species. It’s also a great opportunity to watch traditional fishermen who still row or cast their nets by hand, preserving ancestral techniques.
The activity begins near the lagoon, where the instructor welcomes participants and presents the route. After a short briefing on paddling techniques and the reserve’s conservation rules, everyone sets off on their paddleboard or kayak. The ride lasts around two hours, passing through the lagoon’s calm zones, sometimes reaching the estuary where freshwater meets saltwater. Stops are scheduled to observe wildlife, take photos, or simply enjoy the silence. The return follows the mangroves at a relaxed pace suited to the group.
After the excursion, you can visit the La Somone Nature Reserve, enjoy a local meal at a stilt restaurant, or head to Ngaparou to explore its artisanal fishing port.
