The mountain bike / e-bike ride around Lake Retba is a refreshing journey through landscapes shaped by wind, salt, and light. This unique lake gets its name from its striking color, ranging from pink to purple depending on the season, sunlight, and the extreme salinity of its waters. The route often starts at Niaga or the Lake Lodge, then stretches along tracks bordered by dunes towards the lagoon, passing between Peul villages and salt-harvesting areas.
The first kilometers immerse visitors in a Saharan atmosphere: endless golden dunes, wetlands where flamingos sometimes land, and vast beaches along the Grande Côte, washed by the Atlantic surf. Thanks to e-bikes (or fatbikes), progression is smooth even for beginners, allowing access to spectacular viewpoints over the lake and its salt collectors. On some routes, stops allow for wildlife observation, chatting with villagers, or simply watching the dance of pirogues on the lake.
The local guides, always warm and welcoming, adapt the group’s pace and share numerous anecdotes about life around the lake, the history of the Paris-Dakar rally, or the making of Peul cheese under a centuries-old baobab. Options include a picnic on the dunes, a supervised swim in the salty lake, or a sunset barbecue on the beach. The loop varies from 12 to 30 km, suitable for both families and athletes, and invites the discovery of a Senegal that blends desert, mangroves, and lagoons.
