The Somone Lagoon, a 700-hectare natural sanctuary classified as a reserve, is one of Senegal’s major birdwatching spots and a paradise for outdoor photography. Crisscrossed by mangroves and bordered by a sandbar, it attracts nearly 175 species of birds each year – waders, herons, pelicans, flamingos, egrets, terns, kingfishers, ospreys, kites, seagulls, curlews, and multicolored passerines, as well as many migratory birds from Europe.
Ornithological safaris are mainly conducted aboard pirogues or along marked ecological trails, accompanied by a passionate local guide. The best times are at sunrise and sunset, when the light enhances the lagoon and bird activity is at its peak. Numerous hides have been specially set up for photography in lodges such as Les Manguiers de Guéréo, offering unique viewpoints to capture scenes of flight, courtship displays, or various interactions around water points or on the sandbanks.
Myriads of herons and seagulls accompany the local fishermen, while birds of prey expertly watch for fish scraps. The naturalist guides provide practical advice (equipment choice, spotting, patience, discreet approach) and share the ecology of this exceptional site, which combines biodiversity protection with responsible tourism. Bring a telephoto lens (200mm or more), binoculars, light clothing, and ample photo storage capacity. Access is easy from Dakar or Saly, and the discovery of the reserve pairs well with a visit to the village of Guéréo or the nearby Bandia Park.
