The Mamelles Cliff in Dakar is the main natural climbing site of the Senegalese capital, offering spectacular volcanic walls overlooking the ocean, just a 10-minute walk from the beach. The site features between 25 and 50 equipped routes on rhyolite, ranging from 4a to 7c, with a maximum height of 30 meters and a variety of profiles: overhangs, slabs, verticals, and roofs, providing options for all levels, from beginner to advanced climbers.
Climbing here is mainly done on top-rope, but also on bouldering and trad routes. Sectors like “Red Crack,” “Leg in the Sky,” or “Rough Sea” are well-known, as are the creatively named routes running along the coastline. The setting is exceptional, offering a climb with an unbeatable view of the Atlantic, and the base of the routes is comfortable enough to accommodate families and children, although the overall difficulty level is rather demanding for beginners. Local clubs, notably “Les Lézards de Dakar,” organize outings on weekends, and access is generally free, except during extreme heat or temporary real estate developments.
The equipment is well-maintained and sporty, with descent via two anchors, and the site is frequented year-round, though it’s better to come in the morning before the sun hits the cliff. The cliff is located at the base of the Mamelles Lighthouse, with a panoramic view of the city and the ocean, and local associations work to preserve this urban site, which is threatened by real estate expansion.
