The ornithological and photographic safari in the Saloum Delta is one of the richest experiences for nature enthusiasts in Senegal. This vast UNESCO World Heritage-listed area combines mangroves, bolongs (river channels), sandbanks, forests, and small islands that provide refuge for over 300 species of birds, both migratory and resident. The region is globally renowned for its royal terns but is also home to gray and white pelicans, dwarf flamingos, goliath herons, black-throated egrets, osprey, avocets, bee-eaters, kingfishers, rollers, waders, and raptors.
The safari can be done on foot, by canoe, or by bike, often accompanied by an expert naturalist guide who takes visitors to the best nesting sites—small islands, mudflats, salt marshes, and flooded forests. Mornings and late afternoons, with their golden light and the high activity of birds, provide the best opportunities for wildlife photography. Some local lodges and camps offer tailor-made tours, binoculars, photography tips, and arrange discreet hides that respect the birds’ tranquility.
The observation goes beyond birds: it is common to encounter Souza’s dolphins, manatees, patas monkeys, warthogs, and hartebeests, creating a true safari atmosphere within a stunning riverine and forest backdrop. Many local communities work with the guides to preserve biodiversity and pass on their knowledge of wildlife and the traditional uses of plants and mangroves.
