Discover wood carving in the heart of Saly, a lively seaside resort where traditional craftsmanship, artistic inspiration, and a relaxed atmosphere come together. This workshop introduces you to an ancestral skill widely practiced along the Petite Côte: shaping, carving, working volumes, and finishing. No experience is needed: everyone progresses at their own pace to create a small wooden piece, while learning about the cultural significance of the symbols and motifs used in Senegal.
The session begins with an introduction to materials and tools: • types of wood used (light wood, teak, root wood, sometimes ebony depending on availability), • traditional tools (gouges, knives, chisels, mallets), • iconic African art motifs (masks, human silhouettes, stylized animals).
You then watch a demonstration of essential techniques: • roughing out the wood, • shaping the main forms, • working the hollows and volumes, • carving the details, • final sanding to polish the piece.
Next comes the personal creation: Guided step by step, you choose a block of wood and create a simple piece: a miniature mask, small figurine, geometric symbol, or decorative object. Everyone progresses at their own pace, with continuous guidance for delicate techniques.
The workshop atmosphere, typical of Saly’s artisan spaces, offers a moment of focus, conviviality, and cultural discovery.
At the end of the session, you take home your carved piece, a unique souvenir made with your own hands.
