Description of this activity

Discover the delicate art of wood carving in the peaceful setting of Somone, nestled between the lagoon, preserved nature, and the typical artisan atmosphere of the Petite Côte. This workshop immerses you in a traditional craft passed down through Senegalese villages: shaping wood, creating forms, carving details, and finishing. Accessible to all skill levels, it offers a creative and authentic experience guided by a local artisan.

The session begins with an introduction to materials and tools: • types of wood used (light wood, root wood, teak, sometimes ebony depending on availability), • traditional tools (gouges, chisels, mallets, knives), • commonly carved West African motifs (stylized animals, masks, human silhouettes, geometric symbols).

You then watch a demonstration of the essential carving techniques: • rough shaping of the wood block, • shaping the main volumes, • carving and defining the primary forms, • precise detailing, • hand sanding and finishing.

Next comes the personal creation: Each participant selects a small beginner-friendly block of wood and creates a simple piece — a small figurine, decorative symbol, miniature mask, or geometric form. Guidance is provided to adapt the techniques to each participant’s skill level, whether a novice or already comfortable with manual work.

The workshop takes place in a calm atmosphere, often in a semi-open space, allowing you to enjoy the natural breeze and peaceful surroundings of Somone.

At the end of the session, you leave with your carved creation, a unique souvenir crafted by your own hands.
