Located just 40 km from Dakar, the Pink Lake – also known as Lake Retba – is a legendary place, famous for the changing colors of its waters and its semi-desert landscape. This hike, led by a local naturalist guide, takes you to discover a unique landscape in Senegal, between golden dunes, sandy tracks, and traditional villages.
The route begins on the shores of the lake, where the salt collectors— iconic figures of the site — still work. The guide explains the lake’s formation, the color variations caused by microorganisms, and the economic role of salt in the region. The walk continues through the Niayes dunes, offering stunning panoramas of the lake and the nearby Atlantic Ocean. You then cross areas of arid bushland where you may occasionally encounter herds, before reaching a Peul village for a snack break and cultural exchange.
For the full-day option, the route can include a visit to the Lompoul-sur-Mer beach or an extension to the filaos forest. It’s a complete experience combining sporty walking, nature, and cultural discovery.
