Discover one of Senegal’s most iconic artisanal skills: wood carving. In Dakar, whether on the Plateau, in the Médina, or along the Corniche Ouest, you immerse yourself in the world of Senegalese sculptors, heirs to a tradition passed down for generations. This workshop introduces you to the tools, techniques, and characteristic motifs of African wood while creating your own handcrafted piece. Accessible to all, it is an immersive and creative hands-on activity.
The session begins with a presentation of materials:
• types of wood used for carving (ebony, teak, light wood, root wood),
• traditional tools (gouges, chisels, mallets),
• basic shaping techniques,
• presentation of traditional motifs (masks, silhouettes, symbols).
Next, you observe a demonstration of essential techniques:
• rough shaping of the wood,
• hollowing and modeling,
• forming volumes,
• working on details,
• sanding and finishing.
Then comes the personal creation:
Guided step by step, you select a small block of wood and create a simple piece — stylized mask, figurine, symbol, or decorative object.
The steps are adapted to each skill level: simple shapes for beginners, additional details for more experienced participants.
The workshop takes place in a friendly atmosphere, surrounded by the sounds of tools, the scent of freshly carved wood, and discussions about the country’s artisanal traditions.
At the end of the session, you leave with your wooden creation, a unique keepsake made with your own hands.
