Discover the delicate art of wood carving in the peaceful and natural setting of Popenguine, a coastal village known for its cliffs, protected reserve, and serene atmosphere. This workshop introduces you to an ancestral craft widely practiced in Senegalese villages: shaping wood, creating forms, working volumes, and finishing. Suitable for all skill levels, it offers a creative and authentic immersion in the heart of the Petite Côte.
The session begins with an introduction to materials and tools: • types of wood used (light wood, teak, root wood, sometimes ebony depending on availability), • traditional tools (gouges, knives, chisels, mallets), • traditional carved motifs (masks, human silhouettes, stylized animals, symbols).
You then attend a practical demonstration: • roughing out the wood, • shaping the main forms, • carving and detailing, • hollowing and working volumes, • hand sanding and finishing.
Next comes the personal creation: Each participant selects a small block of wood and creates a simple piece — a miniature mask, stylized figurine, geometric symbol, or decorative object. Techniques are guided step by step to ensure safe progress and to accommodate each skill level.
The workshop takes place in a calm setting, sometimes outdoors or in a semi-open space, allowing you to enjoy the natural atmosphere unique to Popenguine.
At the end of the session, you take home your carved creation, an authentic souvenir made with your own hands.
