The ornithological and photographic safari in the Saloum Delta is one of the richest experiences for nature lovers in Senegal. This vast UNESCO-listed area combines mangroves, bolongs (tidal rivers), sandbanks, forests, and small islands that provide refuge to over 300 species of birds, both migratory and resident. The area is globally renowned for the royal tern but also hosts grey and white pelicans, lesser flamingos, goliath herons, black-bellied egrets, osprey, avocets, bee-eaters, kingfishers, rollers, waders, and birds of prey.
The safari can be done on foot, by pirogue, or by bike, often accompanied by an expert naturalist guide who leads visitors to the best nesting sites—islets, mudflats, salt marshes, and flooded forests. Mornings and late afternoons, with their golden light and high bird activity, provide the best opportunities for wildlife photography. Some local lodges and camps offer tailored tours, binoculars, photography tips, and organize discreet, respectful hides to ensure minimal disturbance to the birds’ tranquility.
The observation experience goes beyond just birds: it is common to encounter Souza’s dolphins, manatees, patas monkeys, warthogs, and harnessed antelopes, creating a total safari atmosphere set against a spectacular riverine and forest backdrop. Many local communities collaborate with guides to preserve biodiversity and share their knowledge of wildlife and traditional uses of plants and the mangrove.
