Description of this activity

Discover the art of handcrafted dyeing in the natural and peaceful setting of Somone, a village known for its lagoon, mangrove, and creative atmosphere. This workshop introduces you to traditional batik, tie & dye, or natural dyeing techniques, used for generations in Senegal. Accessible to all, it allows you to create your own textile piece while enjoying a moment of relaxation and artistic expression.

The session begins with a presentation of techniques and materials:
 • fabric selection (usually cotton or natural fibers),
 • introduction to natural pigments and traditional dyes,
 • batik demonstration (wax application and pattern drawing),
 • folds, knots, and twists specific to tie & dye,
 • immersion in color baths and creation of gradients or contrasts.

You also learn the symbolism of colors, traditional patterns used in West Africa, and the importance of textiles in Senegalese craftsmanship.

Then comes the personal creation:
 You imagine a pattern, tie, fold, wax, or draw, then dip your fabric into the dye.
 The final rinse reveals the harmony of colors and the patterns you have created.
