The Petite Côte excursion is an overview of a region in one day: a fishing village, the Somone lagoon, the bush and its baobabs, then whatever the group chooses to add. Transport, guide and lunch are included.
An itinerary that adapts
The day generally begins in one of the coastal villages: Saly, Ngaparou, the Somone or Mbour. Each has its own atmosphere: a busy fishing port, quiet shaded streets, colourful markets or lively beaches. You see the daily life of the fishermen, the nets being prepared and the pirogues. The next stop is often the Somone lagoon, where mangrove, birds and sandbanks make a soothing setting: you may see herons, egrets, pelicans or fiddler crabs.
The inland bush comes next: savanna, hamlets, baobabs, termite mounds, cultivated fields, herds. After the lunch break, the excursion may include other stops depending on the group: beaches, local markets, craft villages, coastal viewpoints. The itinerary adapts to the season, the accessibility of the places and the time of day, to make the most of the best light.
What is included, what to bring
Transport, the guide and lunch are included, with lunch served in a calm spot. For equipment: closed shoes for the sandy roads, versatile clothing to go from beach to village to bush, a light layer against the breeze near the lagoon, and water. Walking is short and the day suits families; a beach break is sometimes offered, so bring a towel.
The Petite Côte at a glance
The Petite Côte stretches over about a hundred kilometres of coastline, from Bargny to Joal-Fadiouth, with its beaches, bird lagoons, markets and fishing villages. Saly, Ngaparou, the Somone and Mbour are the most cited stops, and the Somone lagoon is the flagship natural site. If you live in Senegal, a day to get out of the resort; if you are visiting, the excursion that spares you from choosing between beach, village and nature.
To extend your trip
To see bigger animals, the Bandia Reserve can be added to the day. The traditional sites and villages and the guided cultural visits gather outings to choose from.
