Description of this activity

Set out for a full day discovering the Saloum Islands, an archipelago designated as a biosphere reserve and renowned for some of the most spectacular landscapes in Senegal. Located between the ocean, bolongs, mangroves, traditional villages, and vast natural expanses, the Saloum offers a rare immersion into an exceptionally rich ecosystem. This outing combines navigation, wildlife observation, cultural discovery, and relaxation in a pristine natural setting.

The day begins with a crossing of the bolongs, these waterways winding between mangroves and small islets. The calm of this protected area provides a striking contrast with more urban regions. As you progress toward the islands, the vegetation changes: mangroves, sandbanks, seagrass beds, and wetlands reveal remarkable biodiversity.

During the navigation, it is common to observe iconic birds of the Saloum: terns, pelicans, egrets, herons, kingfishers, as well as migratory species depending on the season. The archipelago is one of the best birdwatching sites in West Africa.

The excursion also allows visits to some island villages, whose activities are based on fishing, shellfish harvesting, and traditions passed down through generations.

A lunch break is planned on one of the islands or in a shaded area near the bolongs. This relaxing moment allows visitors to fully enjoy the tranquility of the place, the sound of the water, and the views of the marine landscapes.

The afternoon continues with the exploration of other islets, mangrove areas, or secluded beaches where the scenery alternates between white sand, calm waters, and dense vegetation.

This excursion is accessible to everyone. It combines navigation, light walking, and observation. It is recommended to bring water, sun protection, and clothing suitable for heat and humidity.
