Dive into the artistic world of Toubab Dialaw through a handcrafted dyeing workshop, in the heart of a village renowned for its creativity, artists’ studios, and bohemian atmosphere. Inspired by traditional West African techniques, this workshop introduces you to batik, tie & dye, and natural dyeing, in a peaceful setting amid cliffs, colorful alleyways, and ocean views. Open to all, it allows you to create your own personalized textile piece while discovering the ancestral art of fabric coloring.
The session begins with a presentation of materials and techniques:
• choice of fabric (cotton or natural fibers),
• introduction to pigments, natural dyes, or indigo,
• introduction to drawing and traditional patterns,
• discovery of batik (application of hot wax),
• folding, twisting, and tying techniques for tie & dye,
• immersion in color baths and layering of shades.
You also learn the cultural meanings of patterns, the significance of colors, and the artisanal methods still widely practiced in Senegalese villages.
Next comes the personal creation:
You imagine your design, draw, tie, wax, or print, then immerse your fabric in the color baths.
The magic happens during the final rinse, when your pattern is revealed and the contrasts emerge.
At the end of the workshop, you leave with a unique piece, whether it’s a scarf, decorative square, or customized textile.
