This fishing village is a good setting for a cooking workshop and market in Ngaparou: morning market, hands-on workshop, a Senegalese dish prepared together, then a village walk. Guide, workshops and lunch are included, and no cooking knowledge is required.
The market, the workshop, the cooking
The day begins at the Ngaparou market, lively in the morning and calmer by late morning: stalls of vegetables, spices, fish, tropical fruit and everyday goods. You learn the basic ingredients of Senegalese cooking and what the market means for the village. You can buy fruit, spices or everyday items there.
The hands-on workshop changes from day to day: cooking, preparing local products, a craft discovery or everyday skills. Then comes the cooking, with ingredients from the market: thiéboudienne (fish and rice), yassa (onion-marinated chicken or fish), mafe (peanut stew), rice with fish. The dishes are chosen according to what the market offers, but suggestions can be made. The meal is enjoyed together.
The village walk
The day ends with a short stroll through the village: quiet lanes, family homes, small workshops, lively beaches, scenes of fishing and crafts. In the afternoon, Ngaparou is calm, and the walk is easy. The day mixes indoor and outdoor activities; the heat can rise in the kitchen, so wear light, breathable clothing. Keep your belongings close in the narrow or busy parts of the market, and bring water and a hat.
Ngaparou, the Petite Côte away from the resorts
Ngaparou is south of Saly and the Somone, on a Petite Côte that has stayed close to its fishermen, its craft markets and its village festivals. If you live in Senegal, a way to spend a useful day at the table, away from the beach restaurants; if you are visiting, the outing that explains what you then find on your plate. The Popenguine reserve is the area’s other major site.
To extend your day
Other Senegalese cooking classes let you cook the recipe again elsewhere, and crafts and know-how extend the workshop part. The traditional sites and villages offer other village visits.
