The nature hike in Popenguine crosses the village’s community nature reserve to the red cliff that overlooks the Atlantic, with a licensed local guide. Allow 2 to 5 hours of walking depending on the option, snacks included, with an early-morning start to avoid the heat.
From the village to the cliff
The route starts in the village of Popenguine, then joins the reserve’s paths. The walk crosses scrubby savannah, the rocky hills that overlook the ocean, then the red cliff above the beach. The environmental guide shares his knowledge of the wildlife and plants: baobabs, aloes, migratory birds, and sometimes, at a distance, jackals or red monkeys. From the cliff, the contrast between the blue sea and the ochre earth is the high point of the outing.
A picnic or snack break is planned halfway, before a return along the seashore. At the end of the route, swimming is possible on Popenguine’s main beach. A good level of walking fitness is recommended, with a few uphill sections. Included are the nature guide and the snacks.
Bring walking shoes, a hat, sun cream and a bottle of water. The early-morning start avoids the hot hours, and the half-day option suits families as well as groups of friends.
If you live in Senegal, it is the easiest hike to fit into a weekend on the Petite Côte, without going far from the resort. If you are visiting, it is a chance to see a preserved coastline and to learn how a village manages its reserve.
Popenguine, between cliffs and sanctuary
Popenguine, a small coastal town on the Petite Côte, lies about 70 km south of Dakar. It is known for its Marian sanctuary, its nature reserve and its cliffs above a beach that is still unspoilt: it is a stop for anyone looking for calm near the capital. The Popenguine Reserve page describes its red cliffs and birds in detail. The town also goes by the name Ndayane.
