This Fathala Popenguine safari links two reserves: at Fathala, 6,000 hectares of forest explored in an open 4×4 or on foot; at Popenguine, a coastal reserve of cliffs and beaches. The 4×4, the guide and the entry are included.
Two reserves, two landscapes
At Fathala, you cover 6,000 hectares of forest in an open 4×4 or on foot. You come across giraffes, rhinos, zebras, buffalo, monkeys and more than 300 bird species. The safaris run early in the morning or late in the afternoon, to see the animals behaving naturally and to catch the best light.
At Popenguine, the trip continues into a coastal bird reserve, known for its cliff landscapes, its wild beaches and its marked trails for hiking and watching migratory birds. The fishing village, its markets and, depending on the season, the ecological festival complete the visit. You can meet the craftspeople and the villagers.
The package includes the 4×4, the guide and the entry. Bring light clothing, comfortable shoes, a hat, a water bottle, binoculars and a camera. The circuit suits families, groups and nature lovers, with options adapted to children.
If you live in Dakar, this is a package that brings two faces of Senegalese nature together in a single trip, to choose when you really want to see wildlife. If you are visiting, it is a good way to compare a large wildlife reserve with a small, well-preserved coastal one.
Fathala and Popenguine
The Fathala reserve is a safari on a grand scale, and the Fathala page brings together the activities on offer there, in the Fatick region. Popenguine, a small coastal town on the Petite Côte, is about 70 km south of Dakar and is known for its Marian shrine, its reserve and its cliffs; the Popenguine Reserve page details its red cliffs and its birds, and the Thiès region ties it to the coast.
Going further
To carry on, other safaris and other wildlife reserves and animal parks exist across the country, and the guided hikes let you walk the trails of Popenguine.
