The beginner surf lesson in Dakar takes place on the peninsula’s beaches, from the golden sand of Yoff to Ngor beach, with a patient instructor and the equipment provided. Dakar has several surf beaches, each with its own mood: the golden sand of Yoff, the volcanic cove of the Mamelles, Ngor beach. For novices, the Virage, near Yoff, is the natural choice, with its gentle, regular waves and no rocks. The Almadies and Ngor offer sessions on reef breaks or more sheltered beaches, where the swell and wind direction vary with the season.

The session begins with a welcome on the beach and the handing out of equipment, then you discover the basics: balance on the board, first steps in the whitewater, safety rules. The instructors are patient and good teachers. The session is tailored to your level and the chosen spot, with a break and a snack on the beach. The equipment and the instructor are included.

What to bring: sunscreen and a UV-protective T-shirt, polarised sunglasses, snacks, a water bottle, a change of clothes, and a little local currency for the market or the beach clubs. Children are accepted from age 4, with junior equipment.

The ideal season runs from November to June, during the dry season. If you live in Dakar, it is a chance to take up surfing on your own city’s beach, on a weekend morning. If you are visiting, it is a first wave to add to an urban stay.

The peninsula’s beaches

Lessons are held on the beaches of Yoff, Ngor and the Almadies, depending on the day’s swell. Ngor beach and Ngor Island, facing the Almadies, set the scene: fishermen bringing in their pirogues in the morning, markets coming to life, a salty tang along the corniche.
