The kitesurfing lesson in Dakar takes place on the beaches of Yoff and Ngor, on the north of the peninsula, with experienced instructors. Equipment is included, no experience is needed and the activity is open from age 12; allow about 3 hours.
A session on the sand, then at sea
The session starts on the sand with a friendly briefing on safety and how to use the equipment: kite, harness, board. Guided by experienced instructors, each participant progresses at their own pace, learns to handle the wind and discovers the pleasure of gliding in a dedicated area close to the shore. The instructor adapts the session to the participant’s preference and to the wind conditions. Allow about three hours, including the briefing, the exercises on land and the practice at sea. A basic level of swimming is required.
The equipment, the gear and the instructor are all included. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a bottle of water. The instructors are experienced and reassuring for beginners, and the session combines an active spell with a more contemplative one under the Dakar sun.
Yoff and Ngor, two beaches for gliding
Yoff and Ngor are two of the historic lébou villages (the lébou are the traditional fishing people of the Dakar peninsula) on the Cap-Vert peninsula. Ngor combines lébou traditions, maritime culture and a lively beach, with an island reached by pirogue; Yoff stretches between the airport and the Atlantic, with its long beach and its fishing activity. As you work through the exercises, you take in the scenery: the Ngor islands offshore, the cliffs of the Mamelles and views over the city. If you live in Dakar, this is a lesson to try close to home; if you are visiting, it is an active moment in the middle of a stay in Dakar. The page on Ngor Island and the one on Ngor beach give an idea of the setting.
Around the session
After the session, you can visit the village of Ngor, climb up to the Mamelles lighthouse or have lunch on the Almadies Corniche. Other activities are practised on the same coast: surf lessons, paddle and kayak, or jet skiing. Dakar offers plenty of other outings.
