Description of this activity

The beginner surf lesson in Yène, about 40 km south of Dakar, takes place on a beach that stretches between the ocean and a lagoon, with the equipment and instructor provided. It suits everyone, children and non-sporty people included.

Between ocean and lagoon

Yène is a village on the Petite Côte, in the Rufisque department, known for its peaceful life. The beach stretches between the ocean and the lagoon, with fishing nets, fishermen’s voices and the central market close by. The lagoon is home to herons, egrets and flamingos depending on the tides. This is the setting for the lesson.

The lesson begins with an introduction to the sport, a gradual getting-to-grips with the equipment and personal advice. On the sand, balance exercises and first contact with the board alternate with pauses to admire the nature. As the session goes on, beginners learn to read waves, the safety rules, the current and the take-off, under the eye of a patient instructor. The equipment and the instructor are included, and the equipment is varied, with individual advice.

Bring a hat or cap, a water-resistant sunscreen, comfortable clothing for long swims, a waterproof pouch for your belongings and, for bird enthusiasts, binoculars. Lessons are often scheduled early in the morning to enjoy the cool.

If you live in Dakar, it is a weekend morning 40 km away, with a village lunch after the session. If you are visiting, it is a first wave in a more natural setting than the capital’s beaches.
