The beginner surf lesson in Somone takes place on a long beach lined with casuarina trees, next to a lagoon classed as a nature reserve, on the Petite Côte. A qualified instructor teaches the basics on the sand and then in gentle waves, with the equipment provided, at any age.
First waves, moderate current
Somone is a seaside resort known for its calm-water lagoon and its wide beach. It offers a moderate current and a natural layout that suit beginners, whatever their age. The lesson is led by a qualified instructor: it mixes theory and practice, with basic techniques on the sand, balance training, a gradual introduction to handling the board and the first take-offs in gentle waves.
The session runs like this: welcome at the watersports centre, presentation of the equipment, exercises on the beach and then a gradual entry into the water, with individual advice. The equipment and the instructor are included. Come with sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses; binoculars are useful for the lagoon’s wildlife. Lessons are held in a small group or one-to-one, and children are accepted with specific supervision, junior equipment and a secure access.
If you live in Dakar, Somone is a day trip that combines a surf lesson and a lunch by the water. If you are already staying on the Petite Côte, it is an introduction in a calmer setting than the neighbouring resorts.
Somone, between beach and lagoon
Somone, about ten kilometres south of Saly, is a peaceful village built near an estuary. Its lagoon, classed as a nature reserve, is a mangrove and bird site. There is a craft market, and lodging and dining are available by the beach. For the regional setting, the Petite Côte takes in the whole coastline between Bargny and Joal-Fadiouth.
Between two lessons
During the break, you can head out on the lagoon: a pirogue trip, birdwatching, or paddle and kayak. Other surf lessons and courses are available along the coast.
