The hike in Toubab Dialaw starts from the artists’ village, climbs towards the ochre hills then follows the cliffs that overlook the Atlantic, with an environmental guide. Allow 2 to 5 hours of walking depending on the option, snacks included, preferably in the morning or late in the day.
From artists’ lanes to the cliffs
The walk begins in the village, along lanes lined with galleries and workshops. It continues towards the ochre hills, then along the cliffs that overlook the sea, where the sea air blows and the landscape stretches as far as the eye can see. The guide shares stories about the wildlife, the plants and the culture of the area: medicinal plants, traditional fishing, local legends.
Two formats exist. The half day focuses on the coast and the surroundings of the village. The full day goes further towards Yène or Popenguine, with photo stops, bird watching and a snack halfway. The walk lasts from 2 to 5 hours depending on the option, with the nature guide and snacks included. The level is moderate: a few climbs on the hills, but manageable at a good pace.
Bring walking shoes, a hat, water and sun cream. Morning or late in the day are the best times, for the light and to avoid the heat.
If you live in Dakar, it is one of the hikes nearest the capital, easy to fit into a weekend, between art and nature. If you are visiting, it is a way to see an artists’ village without confining yourself to a gallery.
Toubab Dialaw, a Lebou village on the cliffs
Toubab Dialaw lies about 40 km south of Dakar, on the Petite Côte between Bargny and Popenguine. This Lebou village, set against one of Senegal’s ochre cliffs, is a former fishing town that has become a place of art and culture. It belongs to the commune of Yenne, in the department of Rufisque, that is, to the Dakar Region.
After the walk
Neighbouring Yène and Popenguine are the stops mentioned for the full day, with the Popenguine reserve for its red cliffs. Other guided hikes are available in the region, and a massage feels good after a long walk.
