Mountain biking at the Pink Lake, with or without electric assistance, follows dune-lined tracks that lead to the lagoon, between a Fulani village and the salt harvesting area. Bike, helmet and guide are included, on loops of 12 to 30 km.
From the dunes to the lagoon, on two wheels
The route often starts at Niaga, then stretches out along the tracks towards the lagoon. The first kilometres recall the Sahara: blond dunes as far as the eye can see, marshes where flamingos sometimes settle, big beaches on the Grande Cote. With the e-bike (or fat bike), progress stays smooth even for novices, and lets you reach spectacular viewpoints over the lake and its salt harvesters.
The loop varies from 12 to 30 km, suited to families as well as sporty riders. Suitable bikes are offered from age 10, on shorter routes. The local guides adapt the group’s pace and talk about life around the lake, the history of the Paris-Dakar rally or how Fulani cheese is made under a baobab. As options, you can add a picnic on the dunes, a supervised swim in the salt lake or a barbecue at sunset on the beach.
Included are the bike, the helmet and the guide. Bring a cap, sunglasses, sun cream and comfortable clothes. Booking is recommended for weekends and holidays, especially for groups.
If you live in Senegal, it is the sporty outing that makes a change from the beaches, some thirty kilometres from the capital. If you are visiting, it is the best way to see the lake and its surroundings without the noise of an engine.
The Pink Lake, salt and dunes
The Pink Lake is about thirty kilometres north-east of Dakar. It owes its name to its colour, which ranges from pink to mauve depending on the season, the sun and the salinity of its waters. The sight is stronger after the dry season, when salinity is at its highest. The Pink Lake page traces its history, and the Dakar Region gives the wider setting.
Things to do around the lake
For variety, quad and buggy are the motorised option, a horse or camel ride slows the pace, and the pirogue ride offers the view from the lake.
