The pirogue ride in Dakar changes scenery with the departure point: the artisanal port of Soumbedioune, the Plateau or the Corniche, or Lake Retba (the Pink Lake). About two hours aboard a traditional pirogue, with a guide, a snack and life jackets; open to all, children included.
Three departures, three atmospheres
The principle is a slow outing aboard a traditional pirogue (a wooden boat), often decorated with hand-painted patterns. Depending on the departure point you choose, the outing does not tell the same story.
At Soumbedioune, you board at the artisanal port, among the colourful pirogues, and follow the coast past the cliffs, the fishermen and the fish market. From the Plateau or the Corniche, the pirogue follows the urban shoreline with a view of the Mamelles, the Mosque of the Divinity and the Atlantic horizon. At Lake Retba, you sail through a more striking landscape: the water faintly tinted pink depending on the light, the dunes and the salt gatherers at work.
What is provided, what to bring
Included: the pirogue, a local guide, a snack on board and life jackets. The guide talks about the sea, fishing and coastal life. The outing can take place in the morning or late in the afternoon, with pauses for the birds, the fishermen or photos. Routes vary with the tide and the weather. Bring a hat, water, a camera and sun protection. Swimming is possible at Lake Retba or on some Corniche beaches, depending on conditions.
In Dakar, the sea by pirogue
The pirogue is part of the city’s landscape, from the quays of Soumbedioune to the beaches of the Corniche. Climbing aboard one means entering the maritime life of Dakar. If you live here, the outing is a moment to share with children or guests; if you are visiting, it is an accessible way to see the coast other than from the road. For the rest of the day, the Mamelles lighthouse, the Mosque of the Divinity and the Museum of Black Civilisations are landmarks close to the routes. At Lake Retba, the Lake Retba page lists the activities there.
Around the ride
For a change of pace, a boat excursion goes further, an island excursion leads to Gorée Island or the Madeleine islands, and bird watching extends your attention to the coast.
