The group surf lesson in Ndayane takes place on the beach of a fishing village on the Petite Côte, about 50 km south of Dakar. The session lasts 2 hours for adults and teens, 1 hour for children, with a surf coach and the equipment provided.
A small-group lesson on a fishermen’s beach
Away from the big resorts, learning happens in a small group, under the eye of an attentive instructor. After a welcome at the club, explanations and the handing out of equipment, groups are split by level and age. Next come a participatory warm-up, safety advice, a learning session on the beach, then entry into the water, and finally a break with a local snack and a time to talk. The beach has gentle, regular waves, which help novices progress as well as experienced surfers train.
The equipment and the surf coach are included: foam boards to start and suitable wetsuits. Bring sunscreen, comfortable clothes, water, a snack and a small bag for your things. Session packs are valid for 3 months and named. Children are accepted from age 5, and English-speaking and French-speaking instructors supervise according to requests.
If you live in Dakar, the 2-hour session is made for a Saturday morning, with a pack to come back. If you are visiting the Petite Côte, it is a lesson that fits into the life of a fishing village, with the return of the pirogues as a backdrop.
Ndayane, a lébou village
Ndayane is a lébou village (the lébou are the traditional fishing people of the Dakar coast) on the Petite Côte, about 50 km south of Dakar, in the commune of Popenguine-Ndayane. It has shifted from an agricultural economy to fishing, and lies close to a future multipurpose port. Its beach is lined with colourful pirogues, with a fish market and walks in the village to fill the afternoon. The Petite Côte gives the wider setting of the coastline.
After the lesson
The Popenguine Reserve is next door, and Popenguine can be visited on the same day. For a change of scene, an introduction to paddle or kayak is also available at Ndayane, and other surf lessons and courses are available on the peninsula.
