Traditional fishing in Saly is learned alongside coastal professionals, on a pirogue or a motorboat, along the Petite Côte. A local guide supervises the day, everything you need to fish is provided, and you leave about 8 am from the harbour at Saly.
Fishing like the coast’s fishermen
This outing is not after a record catch: it is interested in small-scale fishing, the fishing of the Petite Côte. Along the shoreline, you learn or improve alongside professionals, on a pirogue or a motorboat. Every moment becomes a discovery: choosing the bait, explaining the movements, sharing ways of life. The target species are mullet, sardinella, sea bream and jacks; fishing is good all year, with mullet and jacks more abundant in the dry season and other species in the rainy season.
The bait, the equipment and the fishing guide are included. Remember a hat, sunglasses and suitable clothing. The format is flexible and suits small and large groups alike: family, friends or couples. With the fishermen’s help, you can also learn to clean or cook your catch.
If you live in Dakar, this is a day at sea on the Petite Côte that makes a change from the beach and ends with a fish you caught yourself. If you are visiting, it is a way to meet local life other than as a spectator.
Saly and the harbour
Saly stretches along the Petite Côte, about 80 km south of Dakar, and you leave about 8 am from its harbour. The resort was born in the 1980s, in place of a former Serer fishing town, which gives this outing a particular meaning: it goes back to the source of what the coast has always been. It comes with golden beaches and a warm atmosphere.
Things to do around Saly
To extend your trip, you can stop by the Somone lagoon, head to the Bandia Reserve or push on to Joal-Fadiouth. To stay on the water, a pirogue trip offers a calmer pace, and big-game fishing offers another way to fish.
