A percussion lesson in Guéréo means learning the djembe and sabar in a quiet village on the Petite Côte, between lagoon, mangroves and hills. In a small group, with an instructor, the instrument and a souvenir video, and with no need for an advanced sense of rhythm.
Djembe and sabar, step by step
The session begins with an introduction to the two instruments. The djembe is the emblematic drum of West Africa, prized for its deep, clear sounds; the sabar, deeply rooted in Senegalese culture, is played with one hand and a stick. You learn the postures, the essential sounds and the striking techniques, then the first rhythms and simple compositions. Learning is gradual, suited from complete beginners to participants already used to African percussion.
You do not need an advanced sense of rhythm: everything is explained step by step. The activity takes place in a small group, which makes listening and progress easier. A short rhythmic performance, or a souvenir video, may close the session.
The instruments provided each have their own personality: no two djembes or sabars sound alike, and the breeze from the lagoon can slightly affect the sound. Bring water and light clothing: outdoors, the heat can build depending on the time of day.
If you live on the Petite Côte or in Dakar, it is a quiet outing away from urban bustle. If you are visiting, it is a session off the beach circuit.
Guéréo, a village away from the bustle
Guéréo lies on the Petite Côte, between lagoon, mangroves and hills. It is a quiet area, with a more intimate feel than Dakar or Saly, where the outdoor workshop benefits from the natural calm of the place, the sea breeze and birdsong. The Somone lagoon is a few minutes away, and the neighbouring village of Ngaparou is known for its crafts.
After the session
The Guéréo nature reserve, with its birds, dunes and mangroves, is good for a nature walk, and the wild beaches around are ideal for unwinding. A pirogue trip on the lagoon or a birdwatching session rounds off the morning well. Other percussion workshops are available elsewhere in Senegal.
