Description of this activity

This guided visit in Dindéfelo takes you, over one day, to a historic site in the area, near Kédougou. The price is a flat rate, and booking in advance is advised.

A day at Dindéfelo

Dindéfelo is a Fulani village clinging to the foot of the Fouta-Djalon, in the far south-east of Senegal. Many people come for the waterfall, which is superb, but leaving the same evening means missing the essential: it is also a trekking base, and a village where you can stay. The guided visit of a historic site is another way in: a day with a guide, at a flat rate.

If you stay in Dindéfelo for several days, the visit fits well between two hikes; if you are only passing through, it gives the day a cultural goal, alongside the waterfall. A guided day at a historic site changes the usual rhythm of the place: you go to understand as much as to see. The Fulani village, the waterfall, the hiking trails and the historic site together make a coherent stay, which you can spread over two or three days from Kédougou. In either case, book early: in a village at the end of the country, a guided day needs some margin to prepare.

The south-east, beyond the usual Senegal

The Kédougou region contradicts the image of a flat, sandy Senegal: hills of red laterite, sandstone plateaus, waterfalls dropping a hundred metres. Dindéfelo is one of its reference villages, with its waterfall a few steps away, at the foot of the Fouta-Djalon, in a Fulani village that serves as a trekking base. If you live in Senegal, it is a stay more than an outing, to be prepared with margin: the south-east is far from the coast, and a day-long flat rate fits into several days on site; if you are visiting, a day of culture that complements the waterfall and the hiking.

To extend your trip

Bassari Country and the Niokolo-Koba National Park are the two big neighbouring sites of the south-east. The guided cultural visits and the traditional sites and villages offer other routes in the same spirit.
