An overnight stay in the Lompoul desert is two days and one night among the ochre dunes of the Grande Cote, halfway between Dakar and Saint-Louis. Return transport, accommodation and half board (dinner and breakfast) are included, with departure from the Petite Côte or Dakar.
Two days, one night under canvas
The stay runs over two days and one night: sand dunes, an evening under canvas, a night in the desert. Three options exist, all per group: an overnight stay departing from Saly and the Petite Côte, on half board; a route departing from Dakar, with hotel pick-up, half board and a picnic; and a weekend departing from Dakar, with hotel, camel and quad included (the label mentions Cicès and Sédima).
Included: return transport, accommodation and half board. Drinks are not included. Home pick-up is included when departing from the Petite Côte (Saly, Somone, Ngaparou), and hotel pick-up when departing from Dakar. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before; after that, the amount paid for the booking is not refunded.
The Lompoul desert is a small desert of ochre dunes on the edge of the Atlantic: an unusual setting, between dunes, Sahelian bush and coastline. Bring clothing suited to the swings in temperature, sun protection and something to protect you from the sand.
If you live in the area, it is a short weekend that saves you taking a plane. If you are visiting, it is a singular stop between Dakar and Saint-Louis.
Lompoul, between desert and ocean
Lompoul, a small village of the Grande Cote, in the Louga region, is best known for its desert of ochre dunes and its closeness to the Atlantic. It lies in the Kebemer department, in the north-west of the country, roughly halfway between Dakar and Saint-Louis. The page on the Lompoul desert describes the site in detail.
Extending your time
Heading north, Saint-Louis is the logical next step of a road trip, with its historic island and its parks. To stay in adventure mode, horse and camel rides, quad and buggy and other 4×4 excursions complete a stay in the dunes.
