Description of this activity

The Niokolo-Koba safari takes you, with a guide, into the national park listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site: savannahs, gallery forests and wildlife, in the south-east of the country. Two options, one day or two days, priced per person.

A listed park, one or two days

Niokolo-Koba National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The safari is done with a guide, following the savannahs and the gallery forests that line the watercourses, in search of wildlife. Two lengths are on offer: a guided one-day safari, and a guided two-day safari, which leaves more time on site. Both options are priced per person.

What you pay on site

Niokolo-Koba National Park charges fees payable on site, on top of the price: a visitor permit per person, with a different rate for national and foreign visitors, plus vehicle access at the park’s rate. The amounts are shown in the dedicated section of the listing.

Kédougou, at the end of the Nationale 7

Kédougou is almost 700 km from Dakar, right at the end of the Nationale 7 road, where the country runs up against Guinea and Mali. It is not a day detour from the capital: you come for the park, and for what the region offers around it. The region is where the land rises, far from the image of a Senegal facing the Atlantic, which gives the safari a different setting from that of the coastal reserves. The Kédougou region stands apart from flat, sandy Senegal: hills of red laterite, sandstone plateaus, waterfalls. If you live in Senegal, it is a trip of several days that needs planning, with the Nationale 7 as the common thread; if you are visiting, it is the great wild stage of a circuit through the country. On site, the Kédougou page presents the town, and the Niokolo-Koba National Park page details the park.

Around the park

In the same area, the Dindéfelo waterfall deserves a day of hiking, and other safaris exist elsewhere, such as at Bandia or Fathala, for comparison. The country’s wildlife reserves and animal parks make up a set that can be combined over a trip, from the coast to the south-east. On site, the hike to the waterfall at Dindéfelo, in the same region, is the other great nature outing of the area.

How long does the safari last?

One day or two days, depending on the package chosen.

Is the guide included?

Yes, both options are guided safaris.

Do I need to pay anything on site?

Yes. The park visitor permit, with a national rate and a foreign rate, plus vehicle access, is payable on site, on top of the price.

Is the price per person?

Yes, for both options.

Can I do the safari in one day from Dakar?

Kédougou is almost 700 km from Dakar, which makes a round trip within the day unrealistic.
