The hike to the Dindéfelo waterfall takes you, in a single day, to the foot of a fall almost 100 metres high, in Bassari Country, in the far south-east of Senegal. Two options are on offer, a guided day circuit and a hike with a private guide from Kédougou; walking shoes are advised.
A day out to the waterfall
Bassari Country has nothing in common with the beaches and plains people usually associate with Senegal. Here the land rises: hills of red laterite, sandstone plateaus, waterfalls. The hike leads to the Dindéfelo waterfall, a fall almost 100 metres high, with the bonus of discovering a few historic sites of the region. The outing lasts a day.
Two options are on offer, priced per person: a guided day circuit, and a guided hike to the waterfall with a private guide, leaving from Kédougou. Walking shoes are advised: the outing is guided from start to finish.
What you pay on site
The entrance to the Dindéfelo community reserve is payable on site, on top of the price, per person, with different rates depending on status: non-resident, resident or student. Drinks are also at your own expense. The amounts are shown in the dedicated section of the listing.
Dindéfelo, at the end of the road
Dindéfelo is a Fulani village perched at the foot of the Fouta-Djalon, in the far south-east of the country: not just a photo spot, but a base for treks. The village lies in the Kédougou region, and Kédougou is almost 700 km from Dakar, at the end of the Nationale 7 road, which matters when you plan your trip. If you live in Senegal, this is a destination for a stay rather than a weekend outing, to be considered over several days; if you are visiting, the hike is the highlight of a stay in the south-east. The Dindéfelo Waterfall page presents the site, and the Bassari Country page the territory.
Extending your stay in the south-east
The area lets you extend the trip: Niokolo-Koba National Park for the wildlife, other guided hikes between cliffs and villages, or the traditional sites and villages for local culture.
