A crochet workshop in Dakar teaches you to handle yarn and hook, then make an accessory: scrunchies, earrings, a hat, a bracelet. Equipment and supervision are provided, beginners are guided step by step, and children can take part when accompanied.
Four courses, from scrunchies to crochet with beads
Four options priced per person, which differ in project and level:
- Crochet accessories (scrunchies, earrings), over one week.
- More elaborate accessories (hat, bracelet, shoes), over two weeks.
- A crochet and beads workshop for experienced level, over one month.
- A crochet and beads workshop for beginners, over two months.
These are therefore courses that stretch over time, rather than a single session.
What you learn
The session begins with an introduction to yarns (cotton or natural fibres), hooks of different sizes and the basic stitches: chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet. Then comes a demonstration of the movements: holding the yarn, working the first rows, creating simple shapes (circles, squares, strips), changing colour, finishing and tightening. Projects vary depending on level and the type of yarn.
Crochet does not take strength but a good grip. Equipment is provided (hook, yarn, scissors and simple accessories), and you can try several colours and textures. Comfortable clothing is recommended.
If you live in Dakar, it is an activity to follow over several weeks, which gives you a hobby and a regular appointment. Crochet can then be practised at home, with just a yarn and a hook, and each finished piece makes you want the next one: hat, bracelet, hair accessory or small decoration. Accompanied children can take part, with an adult’s help.
Creating in Dakar
The workshop takes place in Dakar, in the spirit of the Plateau and Médina, neighbourhoods of galleries, shops and colourful markets where you find yarns, fabrics and accessories.
Other creative workshops
To carry on, dyeing, batik and textiles and craft and skills offer other workshops. A walk along the west corniche is a good way to close the session.
