This half day combines Ngor Island and the African Renaissance Monument, two Dakar landmarks that could hardly be more different: a Lebou fishing village set on the water, and a monumental statue towering over the bay of Ouakam. A guide goes with you, at a group rate, from 2 people.
One half day, two faces of Dakar
You start with the crossing to Ngor, by pirogue or motor boat. On the island, the guide leads you through the coloured lanes of the fishing village, with time set aside on the sheltered beach. You then head to the African Renaissance Monument, for its panorama over Dakar and the ocean. Between the two, you move from village life to the scale of the capital.
The guide for the island and the monument is included. The price is a flat rate per group, reduced from 4 participants, and the service runs from 2 people. A reduced resident rate exists.
What is paid on site
The return crossing to Ngor, by pirogue or motor boat, is paid at the Ngor landing stage, on the Almadies side. The monument entrance too: these are official fees, payable on site, on top of the price, with rates that vary depending on whether you are a resident or a non-resident. Drinks, souvenirs and other personal spending are at your own expense.
Ngor and the bay of Ouakam
Ngor is a point of the Cap-Vert peninsula, a former Lebou village where fishing, the beach and surfing sit side by side. Our Ngor Island page tells the story of the island, and the Ngor beach page describes the mainland side; the African Renaissance Monument has a page of its own. If you live in Dakar, it is a half day worth repeating with relatives passing through; if you are visiting, it is the outing that shows, in a few hours, Dakar’s relationship with the sea and with recent history. To place it all, the page on the city, Dakar, gathers the other visits.
To extend the day
The afternoon naturally continues with the bay’s other island: Gorée or another outing among the island excursions. To understand the city better, the guided cultural visits offer other routes.
