A Joal-Fadiouth excursion with the Saloum Delta is a day that moves from the shell island to the mangrove. The wooden bridge leads to Fadiouth, its granaries on stilts and its mixed cemetery; the trip then continues to the sea channels of the delta, with transport, lunch and a guide.
A day between heritage and nature
Joal is the birthplace of Leopold Sedar Senghor; a few steps away, Fadiouth is built on shells. You enter by a wooden bridge and walk along lanes lined with typical houses, community spaces and granaries on stilts. The mixed cemetery, on a neighbouring islet, shows several faiths living side by side and gives a view over the calm waters of the delta.
The excursion continues to the landscapes of the Saloum Delta, listed by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve: mangroves, sea channels, sandbanks. The pace is relaxed, a few stretches are on foot over easy ground, and the trip suits all levels. Depending on the tide and the light, the scenes to photograph change. If the weather changes, the route can be adjusted.
What is included, what is paid on site
Transport, lunch, the visit and the guide are included; only drinks are at your own expense. The pirogue crossing and the official guided tour of Fadiouth are official fees: they are payable on site, on top of the price. Door-to-door pick-up is included from the Petite Côte (Saly, Somone, Ngaparou) and possible from Dakar with a transport supplement.
Joal, Fadiouth and the Saloum
Joal is the starting point of the visit; the Joal-Fadiouth page describes the island, the cemetery and the history of the place, and the Saloum Delta is the natural next step, with the Saloum Delta page to help you understand what you are crossing. If you live on the Petite Côte, it is a day of escape without leaving your region; if you are visiting, a good way to combine culture and nature without organising two outings.
Things to do around Joal and the delta
You can extend with a pirogue ride in the mangrove, birdwatching or other island excursions. For the historical side, the guided cultural visits widen the choice.
