The Shell Island at Joal-Fadiouth is called Fadiouth, and it is explored on foot, in half a day, with a local guide. You reach it by a wooden footbridge from Joal; departures are from Saly, Mbour, the Somone or Nianing, with transport, guide and entry fees, from 2 people.
Fadiouth, lane by lane
The visit takes you through the lanes of the island, where the ground is made of shells: you see the daily life of the inhabitants, the traditional buildings and the landscape around. Depending on the option, the visit includes the granaries on stilts and the shell cemetery, two emblematic places of Fadiouth, or a pirogue ride around the mangroves. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended, especially in the hot hours, because the visit is on foot.
Transport, the guide and entry fees are included. The official island guide is compulsory, and the official guided tour of the site is a fee payable on site, on top of the price, per person.
Options by starting point
There are many departures, all for a half day: from Saly and Mbour, from the Petite Côte, from Nianing, or from the Somone in a small group of 4 to 6 people. A child rate is provided for the option from Saly and Mbour. The price is a flat rate for the group, from 2 people.
Joal and the Petite Côte
Joal is the gateway to the island, and our Joal-Fadiouth page describes the island, the mixed cemetery and the history of the place. The journey depends on the starting point. If you live on the Petite Côte, it is a morning or an afternoon that can be organised without a car; if you are staying in Saly, Mbour or the Somone, it is the cultural visit that balances a beach week. The small-group option of 4 to 6 people from the Somone suits those who prefer a calmer pace, and the child option those travelling as a family.
Things to do nearby
To stay in the region, the Bandia Reserve offers a safari, the Somone lagoon a mangrove to explore, and the Popenguine reserve red cliffs. By category, the island excursions and the pirogue rides complete the visit to Fadiouth.
