The Saint-Louis and Lompoul 2-day tour brings together a town of water and a desert of dunes, with a night in a tent. A guided visit of Saint-Louis, a horse-cart ride, a camel ride and full board are included, with door-to-door pick-up from the Petite Côte.
Two days, one night in the dunes
The tour links Saint-Louis, a former colonial capital at the mouth of the river, and the Lompoul desert, halfway between Dakar and Saint-Louis. In Saint-Louis, the visit is guided; the horse-cart ride and the camel ride are part of the programme; accommodation is at Lompoul, in a tent, for a night in the middle of the ochre dunes, with the Atlantic close by.
Full board is included, accommodation included. Drinks are not included, and the quad is offered as an option, paid on site.
Departures and conditions
Door-to-door pick-up is included from the Petite Côte (Saly, Somone, Ngaparou), and possible from Dakar with a transport supplement. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before; after that, the amount paid is not refunded.
Lompoul, between desert and ocean
Lompoul is a small village on the Grande Cote, in the Louga region, known for its desert of ochre dunes: a singular stop between Dakar and Saint-Louis, halfway between desert and ocean. The Lompoul Desert page describes the site. The Saint-Louis region is, for its part, the Senegal of water and light, read along the river: the contrast with the dunes is what makes the sequence interesting.
If you live in Senegal, it is a full weekend that fits into two days, with no need to organise the road; if you are visiting, a summary of the north of the country, between historic town and desert.
To extend your trip
For nature, the Langue de Barbarie park can be visited at the river mouth, and the Djoudj offers the region’s other great bird outing: the 3-day version of this tour includes it. Horse or camel rides and quad and buggy extend the desert experience.
