In Popenguine, nature is the first model: the mosaic workshop in Popenguine invites you to compose a small work from glass, faience, tiles and natural elements, in a village known for its cliffs and its reserve. Materials and guidance are provided, and the piece goes home with you.
A mosaic inspired by the landscape
The session starts with an introduction to the materials and techniques: pieces of coloured glass, faience and tile fragments, shells and natural materials gathered on the beaches, wooden or tile bases, cutting tools and pliers suited to beginners. The materials change with what has come in: tiles, glass, ceramic or natural elements.
A practical demonstration follows: choosing a simple design (abstract, geometric or inspired by the sea), laying out the tesserae, cutting gradually, gluing, applying grout to firm up the piece and finishing touches that bring out the colours. Each participant then composes their mosaic at their own pace, drawing on the surrounding nature: ocean shades, shell shapes, bird silhouettes or stylised landscapes.
What to know
Materials and guidance are included. The pieces are deliberately small so they can be made in half a day, and the formats are sized for a short session. Light chips are possible, so comfortable clothing is recommended. The tools are safe and suited to beginners. A rigid board or small wrapping is provided to carry your creation. The workshop often takes place in a semi-open space, so you can enjoy the calm of the surroundings. The activity is open to children accompanied by an adult.
If you live in Dakar, it is a day out that combines a hands-on activity with a walk in nature. If you are visiting, it is a one-of-a-kind keepsake, shaped in an unspoilt village.
Popenguine, between cliffs and reserve
Popenguine is a small coastal town on the Petite Côte, about 70 km south of Dakar, known for its Marian shrine, its nature reserve and its cliffs overlooking a beach that is still unspoilt. Part spiritual retreat, part protected nature and part village life, it is a calm stop close to the capital.
Around the workshop
The Popenguine reserve has trails, cliffs, viewpoints and birdwatching, with a wild beach and a rocky coast to unwind on before or after the workshop. The village and its quiet lanes have craft shops and a local market selling sculptures, masks and jewellery. For a walk, a guided hike explores the cliffs.
