Every Wednesday, the Nguéniène weekly market takes on a new dimension: it is the day of the louma, the big market of Serer life. The half-day excursion, with transport, guide and pick-up at your accommodation, takes you there from 2 people.
Wednesday, the day of the louma
Nguéniène is a village of baobabs, millet granaries and herds crossing the track in the early morning, about fifteen kilometres from Saly and the Somone. On Wednesdays, the big weekly market concentrates the life of Serer country. The excursion consists in spending the half day there with a guide.
The market day is known and sets the date of the outing: it is Wednesday, and it is best to book it first before fitting in the rest of your stay. The half day lasts 4 hours, which leaves the afternoon free for the beach.
What is included, and what is not
Transport and the guide are included. Drinks and the restaurant are not included: any lunch after the visit is paid separately. Pick-up is at your accommodation. The outing runs from 2 people, and cancellation is free up to 48 hours before.
The louma from the coast
Nguéniène is linked to the Petite Côte, and its Nguéniène and its weekly market page describes its life. If you live on the coast, the Wednesday morning outing is a simple way to leave the usual circuit; if you are visiting, a means of understanding that, a few kilometres from the beaches, life follows another rhythm: that of the baobabs, the millet granaries and the herds, far from the sun loungers of Saly and the Somone. Pick-up at your accommodation spares you from organising the journey yourself, which matters if you do not know the roads of the hinterland or do not drive.
To extend your trip
After the market, the Somone lagoon and the Popenguine reserve are in the same area. The traditional sites and villages and the guided cultural visits offer other outings of the same type.
