The Diola villages tour in Casamance lasts three days and starts from the Cap Skirring and Oussouye area. It links the villages of Lower Casamance, from meeting the king of Oussouye to the potters, the two-storey houses and Saint-Georges Point; transport, a local guide, accommodation in a village camp and meals are included.
Three days in the Diola villages
The tour first passes through Oussouye and the meeting with the king, then Edioungou and its potters, Mlomp and its two-storey mud-brick houses, Cabrousse and the house of Aline Sitoe Diatta, and Diembering and its well. En route, you stop at the Diola traditions museum, the cashew-shelling plant at Singhalen and the viewing platform at Saint-Georges Point, from where manatees are sometimes seen.
Transport, the local guide, accommodation in a village camp and meals are included; only drinks are at your own expense. Pick-up is free in the Cap Skirring and Oussouye area. The guides speak French, English and Spanish.
What is paid on site
Visits to museums and villages involve contributions, paid on site, on top of the price: a free-contribution entry at the Mlomp and Boucotte museums, and a customary contribution for the meeting with the king of Oussouye.
What to bring, how to behave
Bring decent clothing for visiting the villages and for the meeting with the king. Trainers are recommended; sun cream is not provided.
The Diola land around Oussouye
Oussouye, which you pass through too quickly on the road to Cap Skirring, is the capital of a kingdom: this is where the tour begins, in a Casamance that is green, humid and slow, of rice fields and forests. The villages have their own pages: Mlomp, Edioungou, Boucotte and Saint-Georges Point. If you live in Senegal, it is three days that make a long weekend in the Casamance; if you are visiting, a way to see the region beyond the beach at Cap Skirring.
To extend your trip
The traditional sites and villages bring together other visits in the same spirit, and the guided cultural visits add tours in other regions.
