Spending a day with a local guide in Casamance means entering the region through the people who live there. Starting from Ziguinchor, the guide shows you the mangrove island, villages and Jola culture, for a minimum of two people, priced per person.
A guided day at village level
There is a single option: a guided day in Casamance, priced per person, for two people at minimum. It lasts about 8 hours, which leaves time to stop in a village and talk with its people rather than tick off sites. The guide lives in Ziguinchor, which changes the nature of the outing: you do not follow a fixed circuit, you discover the region through someone who knows its places and customs.
The announced programme combines the mangrove island, villages and Jola culture.
If you live in Senegal, it is a full day that fits well into a longer stay in the south, far from the bustle of the capital. If you are visiting, it is a gateway: a first day to get your bearings before heading off alone to the villages and islands.
Ziguinchor and Casamance
Ziguinchor is the regional capital of Casamance, at the far end of Senegal: tucked beneath the Gambia, it is closer to Bissau than to Dakar. You reach it after a night on the boat or about three quarters of an hour by plane from Dakar. The Ziguinchor page describes the town in detail.
Casamance is a different Senegal: green, humid, slow, woven from rice fields, gallery forests, bolongs (tidal creeks) that wind between the mangroves, and villages. If you arrive by plane, plan your transfers with the Cap Skirring and Ziguinchor airport page.
Complete the day in Casamance
To go further, a visit to traditional sites and villages broadens your discovery of Jola culture, while the visit to Énampore shows Jola architecture that is still lived in. The island of Carabane and an outing by 4×4 through the tracks and the mangrove are other ways to explore the region.
