A transparent kayak at Lake Retba (the Pink Lake) glides over the pink waters of the lake, some thirty kilometres north-east of Dakar. There are two outings, of 15 or 30 minutes, priced per person, with an instructor available for an extra charge if you wish.
Two outings of 15 or 30 minutes
There are two options, 15 minutes and 30 minutes, both priced per person. The kayak is transparent: you look at the water through the hull, on a lake famous for its colours. The short outing gives you a taste; the 30-minute outing leaves time to move a little way from the shore and take photos, which is the whole appeal of this outing. An instructor can be added, for an extra charge.
If you live in Dakar, this is a half-day break at the Pink Lake, to add to a quad bike ride or a visit to the lake. If you are visiting, it is an original way to see a landscape known to everyone, from a position that few postcards offer.
Lake Retba, between the Sahel and the Atlantic
Lake Retba, or the Pink Lake, fascinates with its changing waters, with pink, orange and violet reflections depending on the time of day and the season. This natural site, on the border between the Sahel and the Atlantic, is known worldwide as the legendary finish line of the Paris-Dakar rally. The lake is barely three square kilometres, but it is alive: salt gathering, craft work, adventure sports, with the dunes and the casuarina trees as a backdrop. To understand the site, the Lake Retba page tells its story, and the Pink Lake area page brings together all the activities offered on site. It is part of the Dakar region. About thirty kilometres from the capital, it suits a half-day outing, and as its colours change with the time of day and the season, a morning outing does not show the same lake as one at the end of the day.
Things to do around the lake
On site, quad biking and buggies take you across the dunes, a horse or camel ride follows the lake more slowly, and a 4×4 pushes further into the sand. The country’s other paddle and kayak outings show other stretches of water.
