The fishermen’s return at Mbour is one of the liveliest sights on the Petite Côte: pirogues touch the beach, the catch is unloaded, the fish auction begins. This half day with a guided visit, transport and lunch links that moment to a look around the fishing port, from the Petite Côte or Dakar.
What you see on the beach
Mbour is Senegal’s second fishing port after Dakar. The rendezvous is on the beach: colourful pirogues come ashore, the fishermen unload, and the auction of the catch takes place at the water’s edge. This is a visit, not a feat of endurance: you watch, you ask the guide questions, and you let the bustle carry you rather than follow a timed programme. A meal is part of the outing.
What is included
Transport, lunch and the visit are included; drinks are at your own expense. Door-to-door pick-up is included from the Petite Côte (Saly, Somone, Ngaparou), and possible from Dakar with a transport supplement. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before; after that, the amount paid is not refunded.
Mbour, between pirogues and markets
Mbour is about 80 km south of Dakar and 5 km from Saly, on the Petite Côte, in the Thiès region. The town lives to the rhythm of its pirogues, colourful markets, horse-drawn carts and beaches, which is what makes this visit a good introduction: you see the town at work, far from the hotels. If you live on the Petite Côte, it is a nearby outing that takes a half day; if you are staying in Saly, it is the local complement to a beach week, a few kilometres from the hotel.
To extend your visit
To continue in the same spirit, the traditional sites and villages offer other village visits, the guided cultural visits widen your view of the region, and sport fishing at sea lets you go from spectator to participant.
