This day in the Lompoul desert leaves the Pink Lake early in the morning, for about 3 hours of road through the countryside to the north. On site: ochre dunes, free time, lunch at the tented camp. Transport, guide, meals and site entrance are included.
A long road for a dune setting
The departure is early in the morning from the Pink Lake, for about 3 hours of road in each direction through the Senegalese countryside. On site, the programme combines a walk in the dunes, free time to enjoy the landscape and lunch at the camp before the return at the end of the day. The Lompoul camps are made of nomad tents, at the foot of the ochre dunes.
Two options are offered. The first, the “all-inclusive day”, includes return transport from the Pink Lake, the guide, the meal and the site entrance, priced per person from 2 people. The second leaves from Dakar (Cicès or Sédima), with the camel ride and the quad included, but without lunch. Both last a day.
Given the road, you leave early, with a hat, sunglasses, sun cream and water. Most of the time is spent in the car: the interest is the setting, not the distance.
If you live in Senegal, it is a day off that changes the scenery completely, without catching a plane. If you are visiting, it is the simplest way to see a dune desert in a day from the Pink Lake, without renting a vehicle or negotiating a ride.
Lompoul, between Dakar and Saint-Louis
Lompoul is a small village on the Grande Cote, in the Louga Region, best known for its desert of ochre dunes and its closeness to the Atlantic. It sits roughly halfway between Dakar and Saint-Louis, which makes it a singular stop. The Lompoul Desert page tells the story of the landscape, and the Pink Lake, the starting point, is about thirty kilometres from Dakar.
Other ideas around the desert
Horse and camel rides, quad and buggy and 4×4 tours are the classic dune activities, and can be combined with this day depending on the option.
