Sea fishing from Ngor is a half-day trip off Dakar, with a captain and crew, for four people at most. Rods, tackle, bait and life jackets are provided; the trip suits beginners and keen anglers alike.
A fishing morning in a small party
Departure is around 8:30 am, at the far end of Ngor beach, for several hours at sea out to the fishing spots of the area. The return is around 12 pm or 12:30 pm. On board, everything you need is provided: fishing rods, tackle and bait, with the supervision of the captain and the crew. The boat takes four people at most, which keeps the trip personal: a family or a group of friends fills the boat, and the morning is spent in a small party, with no crowd on board.
Life jackets are provided for adults and children alike. The snack and drinks are not included: bring a hat, sunglasses, sun cream and water.
Ngor, a fishing village on the edge of the capital
Ngor is a village district at the northern tip of the Cap-Vert peninsula, with Lébou traditions and a maritime culture that is still very much alive: people still fish here, and Ngor Island can be reached by pirogue. Heading out to sea from here means leaving from the village rather than from a marina, among the pirogues of people who fish for a living. If you live in Dakar, the morning fits between breakfast and lunch, ideal for a Saturday with family or friends; if you are visiting, it is a way to get out on the waters that border the city, without organising a fishing holiday. The Ngor beach page and the Ngor Island page give an idea of the setting.
Around the trip
On the return, Ngor beach and its restaurants extend the morning: you can carry on talking about the day’s catch, and the Almadies are next door. Other outings on the water round off the fishing: sport fishing at sea, the boat excursions or a visit to Gorée Island.
