The boat excursion in the Sine-Saloum Delta is a full day among bolongs (tidal creeks), mangroves, islands and fishing villages. The price includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, with a meeting point in Saly for residents.
A day among bolongs and mangroves
The boat heads gently out after a short briefing to sail between the waterways of the delta. The calm of the water, the mangrove and the atmosphere of the fishing villages make up the heart of the outing. Depending on the route and conditions, you may see birds, fishermen, mangrove trees and scenes of local life. The ride can also include photo stops, a swim or a look at the surrounding islands. The route varies with the weather and the tide.
The package is for the day, per person, with pick-up in Saly. The driver collects tourists at their hotel and brings them back after the activity; for residents, the meeting point is in Saly. Children can take part with an adult, and you do not have to be able to swim: if there is swimming, it depends on conditions and stays supervised.
What you pay on site
The boat pass is not included. The permit for the Saloum Delta park is payable on site, on top of the price, per person, with a different rate for Senegalese residents and for foreigners. The amounts are shown in the dedicated section of the listing. Bring light clothing, a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, water and a camera.
The delta, a land between earth and sea
The Sine-Saloum Delta is about 150 km south of Dakar, listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1980 and a Ramsar site, covering more than 180,000 hectares: a land of bolongs, mangroves, baobab forests, islands and villages on stilts, where Serer, Mandinka and Fulani traditions live on. The Saloum page presents the territory, and the Sine-Saloum page gives its spirit: Senegal at a slower pace. If you live on the coast, it is a day away from the beaches; if you are visiting, it is a simple entry point to the delta, before staying longer. Our page on the Sine-Saloum Delta details what you find there.
Going further in the delta
To go further, Fathala Reserve offers a safari, Mar Lodj and Simal open onto the interior of the delta, and the island excursions, the pirogue ride and bird watching are the natural complements.
