The Fulani and Serer bush village of the Petite Côte can be visited in half a day, with transport and a guide, to meet its inhabitants and their traditions far from the beaches. Departures run from 2 people; drinks and restaurant are not included.
A half-day away from the coast
Behind the coast, the bush is another world: around Nguéniène, you find baobabs, millet granaries, herds crossing the track in the early morning. The outing leads to a Fulani and Serer bush village, where you come to get to know the daily life and traditions of the inhabitants. The package lasts half a day, with transport and a guide included. The price is a flat rate for the group, and departures run from two people: a couple, two friends or a family are enough to set off. A guide accompanies the group throughout the visit, and the half-day leaves time to ask questions about village life, its traditions and its rhythms.
Not included: drinks and the restaurant. Free cancellation is possible up to 48 hours before.
The bush behind Saly
The village is on the Petite Côte, in the Nguéniène area, about fifteen kilometres from Saly and Somone. It is a Senegal that many holidaymakers never see, best experienced on a Wednesday, the day of the louma, the village’s big weekly market: our page on Nguéniène and its market describes the atmosphere. If you live in Dakar, it is an outing that steps off the beach-resort circuits without going far, and introduces Fulani and Serer communities in a different way than through the markets; if you are staying on the coast, it is an encounter that makes a change from beaches and hotels, with a guide to bridge two worlds.
Going further
In the same spirit, the country’s traditional sites and villages offer other encounters, and the guided cultural visits give keys to understanding. On the coast, the Somone lagoon and Joal-Fadiouth are within a day’s reach.
