The Casamance islands tour is made by pirogue around Carabane, among bolongs (tidal channels), mangroves and island villages. A day with a guide, transport, lunch and entry fees, from 2 people, to see a Casamance that unfolds at the pace of the water.
A day by pirogue between the waterways
You leave the roads for the bolongs, the channels that wind between the mangroves. With a local guide or boatman, you run alongside the islands around Carabane, watch the birds and see the daily life of the people who live at the water’s edge. Depending on the option, the route includes stops in different villages, a visit to Carabane, time to relax or a lunch break.
Transport, guide, lunch and entry fees are included. The boarding point depends on the option and on where the participants are staying. Bring light clothes, a cap, sunglasses, sun cream and water.
What is paid on site
The pirogue is hired per boat, for 15 people at most. This hire is an official cost: it is payable on site, on top of the price of the option, and each person’s share varies with the number of participants, since the boat is shared. The bigger the group, the lighter the individual share.
Carabane and its neighbouring islands
The Casamance is the green, humid Senegal, far from the dry axes of the north: rice fields, forests, bolongs and waterside villages. The trip circles Carabane; the Carabane Island page explains the site before you leave. If you live in Senegal, it is the outing that gives substance to a long weekend in the Casamance; if you are visiting, it is an accompanied day that spares you from navigating the channels alone.
The tour pairs well with nearby sites: Enampore, Egueye Island or the village of Mlomp are also worth a detour, to explore on your own or as an extension.
To extend your trip
The island excursions in this category let you compare the Casamance with other archipelagos, and guided cultural visits add a view onto the villages and their history.
