The guided visit of Énampore is led by a village guide, in the heart of a Jola village in Lower Casamance: the royal site, the sacred groves, the school museum and the traditional impluvium house. Depending on the option, allow from 30 minutes to 1 h 30.
Three visits, three lengths
Énampore can be explored in three options, all priced per person:
- The royal site: 1 h 30 of guided visit.
- The sacred groves: 1 hour.
- The school museum: 30 minutes, the shortest.
You can choose them separately, depending on the time you have. The visit of the impluvium house is included. A village guide leads each visit, which gives you access to explanations that no sign provides: why a place is sacred, how you enter it, what is done there and what is not.
The sacred groves and the royal site are living places, not stage sets: follow the guide’s instructions, dress modestly and ask before taking photographs.
An inhabited village, not a museum piece
The impluvium house, the Jola architecture that collects rainwater in the centre, is part of the village here: people live in it, cook in it and sleep in it, under round thatched roofs, some of them more than a century old. That is the argument for Énampore: traditional architecture is not behind glass, it is still in use.
If you live in Senegal, it is a half day or an easy stop to fit into a stay in Casamance, with solid cultural content. If you are visiting, it is a first contact with Jola culture, taking the time to meet the village and not just pass through it. The Énampore page brings together the offers at this place; the detailed page on the village of Énampore tells its story.
Énampore in Casamance
Énampore lies in Lower Casamance, in the Ziguinchor area. Casamance is a green, humid and slow region of rice fields, gallery forests, bolongs (tidal creeks) between the mangroves, and villages.
Other visits around Énampore
The region’s traditional sites and villages are easy to visit in the same trip: the village of Mlomp lets you continue exploring Jola Casamance, and a pirogue ride in the mangrove rounds off the day.
