A weekend in Oussouye combines accommodation and discovery of Diola country, in Lower Casamance, with Saint-Georges Point on the programme. Two flat-rate options: per night, or over three days, from Friday to Sunday. Booking in advance is advised.
Two stay options
The first option is a weekend at Oussouye and Saint-Georges Point, priced per night, at a flat rate. The second is a 3-day stay, from Friday to Sunday, also at a flat rate. In both cases, accommodation is at the centre of the option, with the discovery of Diola country around it: you sleep on site and set out from there to discover Diola country, rather than making the round trip from the beach.
The per-night rate suits those who want a short stay or who are extending a trip in the Casamance, while the three-day stay, from Friday to Sunday, covers a whole weekend.
Oussouye and Saint-Georges Point
Most travellers pass through Oussouye without stopping, on the road to the beach; yet it is the capital of a Diola kingdom, at the foot of kapok trees, and a calm base for discovering the Casamance, at your own pace and without hurrying. Saint-Georges Point is a viewing platform, from where manatees are sometimes seen.
The Casamance stretches between The Gambia to the north and Guinea-Bissau to the south: it is another Senegal from that of the dry, hurried routes, green, humid and slow, woven from rice fields, gallery forests and bolongs winding between the mangroves. Oussouye is one of its cultural hearts. If you live in Senegal, it is a real weekend away from the city, with the calm of a green, humid country, without long days on the road between two stops; if you are visiting, a way of seeing the Casamance other than through its beach.
To extend your trip
The traditional sites and villages gather village visits, such as Mlomp and its two-storey houses; the guided cultural visits offer other routes; and Cap Skirring is within reach by road to end the stay at the beach.
